Human Right 2 Water will be co-hosting two events and participating in two other events for the 2023 United Nation Water Conference.

Multistakeholder Commitments to the Water Action Agenda: Integrated Water and Climate Solutions from Science to Decisions to Actions

Human Right 2 Water will be co-hosting a Side Event at the UN Water Conference focusing on the cross-cutting cooperation between the water and climate sectors. The Integrated Water and Climate Solutions: From Science to Decisions to Actions side-event will take place on the 22nd of March from 12:30 to 13:45 EST in Conference Room A at the United Nations Head Quarters in New York.

The event consists of two parts and a Q&A session. Part 1 will focus on the science and the technological tools and Ms. Lis Mullin Bernhardt, the Head of the Freshwater Unit from UNEP, will moderate it. The panelists for this first part are Mr. Abou Amani, Director of the Water Sciences Division of UNESCO, Dr. John Pomeroy from Global Water Futures Programme, Mr. Pablo Bereciartua from Global Water Partnership, Mr. Andrés Felipe Sánchez Peña from the Organization of American States (OAS) and board member of Human Right to Water, Mr. Amgad Elmahdi from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and Mr. Tom Williams from World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

This event will also present voluntary commitments for the Water Action Agenda submitted by multistakeholder partnerships that lead to game-changing solutions to the pressing water and climate challenges. This part will be moderated by our CEO at HR2W, Amanda Loeffen. Mr. Senzo Mchunu, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation of South Africa, will give the opening statement. Then, we will have Mr. Abderrahman Ouasli, Director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, from Tunisia and a Representative from Palestine give their national commitments and a representative from the Niger Basin Authority and from the Volta Basin Authority give their River Basin Commitments.

Scaling Up of Right to Children on WASH in Schools

The Scaling Up of Right to Children on WASH in Schools side event will focus on the ways in which we can try to uphold the constitutional right to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities that children have. This side event will take place on March 23rd from 12:30 to 13:45 EST in Conference Room B at the United Nations Head Quarters in New York.

This event is co-organized with the Centre For Community Health Research (CCHR), Human Right2Water, Switzerland; AOSED (An Organization for Socio-Economic Development ), Bangladesh; WHEC (Women’s Health and Education Center), USA; Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB), Malaysia; Malayala Manorama National Daily, India; FANSA (Fresh Water Action Network South Asia-Kerala), India.; CeTAmb (Research Center on Appropriate Technologies For Environmental Management In Resource Limited Countries), University of Brescia, Italy.

The event will consist of two parts, first, a 15-minute presentation from two experts on WASH, Upasana Chauhan, UN Representative at Manup Campaign, and Priyanka Shendage from UNICEF. These presentations will be accompanied by interactive videos provided by Ms. Riya Mary and Mr. George Thomas (see videos below). Then, there will be a 35-minute moderated panel discussion with Ms. Bhumi Sharma from the United International Federation of Youth (UN1FY), Ziadath Achimi from ECEaFem: Woman for Water Climate and Environment, Odwa Ntsika Mtembu, from World Merit SA and our youth representative from South Africa, Noemie Plumier from Human Right 2 Water and our youth representative from France, and Gabriela Calderon from UNESCO Groundwater Youth Network and Grupo Aguas from the National University of Mar del Plata.

Mainstreaming Ecological Restoration in Freshwater Ecosystems

Mainstreaming Ecological Restoration in Freshwater will be a co-organized event by the University of Évora, the Society for Ecological Restoration, and Water4All, this UN Water Conference side event will be held offsite on a hybrid format at 2 pm on March 23rd. It will take place on the European Union Delegation to the United Nations in NY at 666 Third Avenue.

This side event intends to announce a voluntary commitment to promote the adoption of standards-based ecological restoration for inland and coastal waters in order to improve ecological, human health and well-being, and ecosystem services outcomes from restoration investments in these ecosystems. This commitment will include an emphasis on legal frameworks to create consistency in the delivery of local, national, and global restoration programs while also stimulating policy momentum for the revision and update of water and pollution conventions to better incorporate restoration. It will consist of three panels, one on environmental law and restoration, another one on practice and research around the world, and the last one on this same topic.

Amanda will be participating in the second panel: Practice and Research around the World on the International legal and policy frameworks to promote a human rights-based approach in river basin communities to protect our right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

Local and Regional Governments Day

Financing Water and Sanitation Infrastructure

Our CEO, Amanda Loeffen, has been asked to participate in the Side-event Financing Water and Sanitation Infrastructure segment. This session will be held at 4 pm EST on the 22nd of March in the Riverview Room on the 28th floor of the Millenium Hilton. This session will look to establish national and multilateral instruments to finance water savings, with priority given to areas under great quantitative pressure, and how to best involve philanthropic organizations.

UCLG Africa will facilitate the segment. These will be the experts joining Amanda for this debate, Chakauya Gilson Munyaradzi, Mayor of Radcliff in Zimbabwe, Oumar Ba, President of the Association of Mayors of Senegal, Danho Paulin Claude, President of the Mayors Association of Côte d’Ivoire and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mounir Laymouri, President of the Moroccan Association of Presidents of Communal Councils (AMPCC), Patrick Verkooijen, CEO at the Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA), and Saroj Kumar Jha, Global Director at Water Global Practice, World Bank Group.
