Integrated Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Solutions in Rural Locations
Rural communities across Africa continue to face interconnected challenges of water scarcity, limited energy access, food insecurity, and environmental degradation. On 10 November 2025, Human Right 2 Water and the Water Research Commission (WRC) will co-host a session exploring practical, community-driven solutions through the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus — a holistic framework that integrates resources to promote sustainable development and social equity.
The session, titled “Integrated WEFE Solutions in Rural Locations,” will take place during the AWSISA Africa and Global South Water and Sanitation Dialogue Conference at 11:30 am – Workshop 4, Fabia 1 Room. It will be moderated by Mamohloding Maahlo (Water Research Commission) and feature an introduction by Amanda Loeffen (Human Right 2 Water). Hon. Hemed Mwabudzo will present on “Water Facilities for Inclusive Socio-Economic Rural Livelihoods in Kwale County.” The roundtable discussion will include Commissioner Henk Boshoff (South African Human Rights Commission), Professor Tracy-Lynn Field (University of the Witwatersrand), Amanda Loeffen, and Eskendir Demissie (African Development Bank)
The session will address key topics such as:
- Equitable water access and social justice
- The socio-economic dimensions of water management through Human Rights-Based Approach principles
- The application of the WEFE Nexus in rural and marginalised communities
- Climate change adaptation and resilience strategies
This workshop aims to share real-life examples and lessons from across the SADC region, prompting discussion on how an integrated approach can strengthen community engagement, reduce costs, and deliver environmentally sustainable outcomes. Practical initiatives such as the WEFE Nexus Project in Kwale, Kenya and the South African Water Justice Project will be highlighted as models for advancing holistic and inclusive water management solutions.
