Beyond Borders: Law and Climate for Water Security

Beyond Borders: Law and Climate for Water Security – International Webinar

The Indus Waters Treaty, once hailed as a cornerstone of regional cooperation, is increasingly tested by ecological, legal, and political challenges. For lower riparian states such as Pakistan, climate change intensifies water insecurity, compounding existing geopolitical pressures. As the basin becomes more vulnerable, there is an urgent need to revisit the treaty’s relevance in the 21st century and consider how law, policy, and regional cooperation can work together to safeguard water security.

The Institute of Regional Studies (IRS), Islamabad, is hosting an upcoming international webinar, “Beyond Borders: Law and Climate for Water Security,” to be held soon (initial date on the flyer has been postponed). HR2W CEO, Amanda Loeffen, has been invited to participate in this event and bring a human rights perspective to the conversation. This dialogue will bring together distinguished legal experts, environmental scholars, and policymakers to reflect on one of the most pressing issues of our time: the future of transboundary water governance in an era of climate stress.

The event will feature two focused panels designed to provide a multidimensional perspective:

  • Legal Frameworks for Lower Riparian States
  • Climate Change, Water Security, and Regional Cooperation

Through these discussions, the webinar will explore innovative legal frameworks, opportunities for regional collaboration, and the broader environmental and legal implications of shared water governance.
