Ensuring Accessible Information for Water and Environmental Awareness

Access to information can empower communities to make informed decisions about their health, environment, and resources. Proactive, accessible information about water, sanitation, and the environment, promoting transparency to enable communities to respond to challenges, particularly in the context of climate change and resource scarcity. To create a society where everyone understands their human rights to water and sanitation, we need to start with educational programs and broad awareness campaigns that instill this knowledge early and reinforce it throughout life. Educational institutions are a key stakeholder in embedding environmental awareness, however, governments and organisations also need to champion transparency by making information available and easily accessible.
The Importance of Accessible Environmental Data and Information
Water service providers and other businesses have a responsibility to be transparent in regard to data about wastewater quality, impacts on the environment, and the sustainability of local water sources. This type of transparency and access to data is essential for improving community relationships, trust, resource planning, and responding to crises. Climate change and population growth impact water availability, making it even more crucial to manage resources wisely. Accessible, up-to-date information supports both local authorities and individuals in planning for a future where water may be less available.
Several countries institutionalise information, sharing best practices and developing policies that make data available to the public in a readily available format. These measures encourage a culture of responsibility, enabling communities to be better equipped to advocate for environmental stewardship.
Case Study: Peru,DATASS Project for Monitoring Rural Water Supply
In Peru, the Diagnostic System on Water Supply and Sanitation in Rural Areas (DATASS) represents an exemplary model of how technology can facilitate accessible environmental data. Launched in 2022, this initiative highlights Peru’s commitment to sustainable development, especially in rural areas where water access can be challenging.
DATASS was driven by a clear need: without a reliable diagnostic system, there were significant gaps in understanding the real situation in Peru’s rural areas. These knowledge gaps had an impact on effective decision-making, limiting resources and the quality and sustainability of water and sanitation services. The project aim was to implement a trustworthy system to bridge these gaps, enhancing service coverage and quality while promoting rural development.
The initiative employs two technological components: telemetry and an offline application. As part of the Sustainable and Innovative Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Services in Rural Areas of Peru program (SIRWASH), these tools enhance water monitoring and data collection in rural areas. Ten monitoring stations in four regions make data accessible online, enabling even isolated communities to track water quality and service reliability.
Thanks to the DATASS system, it was discovered that 96% of Peru had dangerously low chlorine levels in drinking water (less than 0.5mg/l), and one in four drinking water systems in Peru showed that service continuity was ranked very low, between deficient and very deficient. This insight is essential to enable targeted investment so that water systems are repaired and maintained where they are most needed. Telemetry also ensures that data from remote regions is continuously updated, empowering decision-makers and service providers to act on real-time information, and a rapid response to contamination issues. This system thereforeimproves public health and resilience to environmental challenges.
Proactively making environmental data accessible is a responsibility shared by governments, educational institutions, and water service providers. The DATASS project serves as a model, showing that when technology and policy align with a commitment to accessible data, the benefits are felt across society, especially in vulnerable, underserved areas.
